Phoenix (Chinese: Feng Huang) Dancong is a highly significant variety of Chinese Oolong tea, originating from Phoenix Mountain in Chao’an County, Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, with a cultivation history that dates back to the Song Dynasty. Phoenix Dancong tea comes from exceptional single tea bushes of the Feng Huang Shuixian variety, which have been carefully cultivated and processed by generations of tea farmers over hundreds of years. Historically, because the fresh leaves resemble bird beaks, local tea farmers referred to it as "Bird Beak Tea," a name that remained until 1956 when it was officially renamed "Feng Huang Dancong (鳯凰單叢）".
Phoenix Dancong tea is renowned for its rich aroma and flavor, earning it the nickname "perfume of tea." There are now more than 200 known types of this tea, with such a wide range of aroma profiles that even experienced tea farmers found it difficult to categorize. It wasn’t until 1996 that experts identified the ten main aroma types of Phoenix Dancong, which include: Honey Orchid, Almond, Yellow Gardenia, Iris Orchid, Magnolia, Ginger Flower, Cinnamon, Osmanthus, Tuberose, and Jasmine.
